Back in 2019, Sweven Wealth started as a financial advisory firm that specialized in helping athletes manage instant wealth. It was quite an ambitious vision, but one I had faced head on as I reflected on my own financial journey after completing my NBA career.
In fact, the firm is named after this type of idea, as the Old English word ‘sweven’ means vision or dream. We sought to make things better for our clients by helping them successfully manage and grow their money. We were excited to implement time tested, successful financial strategies. Potential clients began to reach out. Discovery calls were scheduled. Anticipation began. However, expectations did not meet reality.
The expectation was to discuss risk tolerance, determine asset allocation, and analyze cash flow. The reality was the conversations were about feelings, not finances. Discussions frequently revolved around the impact that money had on familial, romantic, and platonic relationships. Coincidentally, as net worth began to rise, so too did feelings of confusion, guilt, and judgement. Calls often failed to include substantive discussions on how to achieve financial goals. Most of the time we never even got to financial goals!
Clients didn’t want immediate financial analysis, they sought an advocate who listened, asked questions, and acknowledged their emotional state. They wanted to be encouraged, not judged. We wanted to help them take ownership of what’s important, understand the meaning of enough, and show up in their relationships in a positive way.
